An excellent performance in round 1 of the JJ Grand Prix finals by Darcy Broad saw him storm to victory finishing the meeting with 4 wins including tapes to flag in the final. He was maybe not considered one of the favourites to take the title but has very much put himself in the frame with an early 3 point lead. Chasing him hard in the final was Dmitrij O’Shea who surprisingly did not win a race all meeting but was still able to finish on 12 points. Completing the podium was Craig Leonard who only crept into the semis on countback but rode well to make the final. He was in second place for 2 laps until O’Shea found some drive to ride round him coming off the second bend of lap 3. Richie Sampson had a good meeting making the final and ending in second place overall with 13 points. A poor gate in the final meant he didn’t add to that tally. Giles Hill finished top of the pile after the qualifying races but made a hash of his semi-final and could not add to his 11 point haul. 10 points before the semis was Robbie Cormack’s score but an ailing machine hindered his progress to the final. Jordan Trott and Brian Broadbank were the other semi-finalists and are well in contention with 2 rounds to go.

 

Of the rest, Lloyd Byford, Mitchell Spink and Chris Holmes all scored 7 and will need to up their game to make the semis next time out as will Boyd Beaton and Marcus Jay on 6. Andrew Knapkin started the meeting with a good win in heat 3 but a heavy fall in his next ride dented his confidence and he dropped back to score 5 points. Wayne Josephs also finished on 5 but did well to come back after 2 scoreless rides. The surprise was Cameron Monk who was one of the favourites going into the finals but didn’t carry his qualifying form forward and will now have a tough job to challenge for the top spots.
