Tweedside’s Fraser Bravery won a closely contested round 1 in the North. His heat 17 win putting him on 12 points meaning only Robbie Cormack from Southside could beat or match his score. Cormack was out in heat 18 but a poor gate left him at the back and although he passed Simon Leadbitter he couldn’t catch Oscar Tyrer or Harry Coles. 11 points did leave him second on the podium while a run-off was required for third place. Hampden’s John Graham came out on top beating Lanarkshire’s Cameron Monk by half a wheel in a tight battle. Unattached Richie Harrington finished behind the aforementioned riders but can be pleased with his 10 points in his first JJ outing. Coles from Thornaby had an up and down meeting with three wins and two last places while Logan Bremner rode steadily for his 9 points. One of the favourites, Teesside’s Giles Hill, started with a machine failure then a win but fell away to finish on 7 points alongside Hull’s Andrew Knapkin. The rest of the riders will have to up their game for round 2 or they will be left behind in the battle for a semi-final place even at this early stage of the season. It was the experience of Bravery that showed through followed by the inexperienced Cormack…….the only North rider that has taken up his coaching sessions so far this season.
