JJ Home International Round 1

England comfortably took round 1 of the home internationals with all four riders recording a double figure score. They all managed at least 2 wins and were just too strong for the other nations. Scotland finished in second place 3 points ahead of Ireland who had the highest scorer on show in Dmitrij O’Shea who was only beaten in the final heat by Lloyd Byford. O’Shea didn’t have the back up to overhaul the Scots who had more consistent scores throughout the team. Indeed their reserve Robert Mountford scored 5 points from 2 rides that may see him claim a starting place in the next meeting. Wales finished 2 points behind Ireland but gave it their all. They will look to their top two of Wayne Josephs and Ashley Wakerley to score a few more next time out. For now though, England sit way out in front and the other teams have a lot of hard work to do bridge the gap.

JJ Home International Round 2

England took the round 2 honours at The All Saints Stadium but were pushed much harder than in round 1. Only 1 Englishman made double figures this time and that was Jordan Trott making his first appearance in the competition. He was well backed however by Lloyd Byford and Brian Broadbank who could have both hit double figures had it not been for a retirement and a fall respectively. Wales were the team who kept England honest with their four riders only collecting 2 last places between them. All their riders were consistent throughout and they have moved above Scotland into second place on aggregate. Ireland and Scotland both finished on 25. The Irish relying heavily on their number one Dmitrij O’Shea who scored 12 with 4 wins and a last. He did get some backing from Lee Mcauliffe who had 2 excellent wins in the middle of the meeting. As for the Scots, their top 2 of Robbie Cormack and Cameron Monk score 20 of their 25 points so they really need another rider or two to step up.

JJ Home International Round 3

England again finished top of the pile in round 3 of the Home Internationals. This time they found it much tougher to pull away from the chasing teams. Mitchell Spink led the way for the English with 12 points and was well backed by Giles Hill on 11. After heat 15 England were level on 24 with Scotland but 3 wins and 2 second places in the last 5 heats swung it England’s way. Scotland went the opposite way and only scored 4 points in those final heats and were overtaken for second in this meeting and overall by Ireland. The Irish as always led by Dmitrij O’Shea who recovered from a first race last to score 11 in his other 4 rides. He received solid support from Lee Mcauliffe and Damien Flaherty as they finished 5 behind England. The 4 Scots all battled hard and will be frustrated by their finish which was epitomised by Cameron Monk falling when leading heat 17 and kicking the air fence in disappointment. Wales finished last but started the meeting well and were actually joint leaders at the interval. However, they could only muster 4 points between them in the final 8 heats as all their riders faded after bright starts. England will have to not turn up in the final round if they are not to be crowned Champions again but it is anybody’s guess as to who will finish runners-up as the other 3 nations are very closely matched.

JJ Home International Round 4

Wales pushed England all the way in round 4 just not doing enough to deny the English 4 win out of 4. The teams were level going into the final heat and Lloyd Byford kept Chris Ford behind him to see England home by 1 point. Mitchell Spink top scored for England with Byford also hitting double figures. Wales’s best meeting of the 4 saw them haul themselves into a tie for second overall with Scotland. They did this despite their number 1 Wayne Josephs being rested after a heavy fall in heat 8. Richie Sampson came in for him and stayed in after a good couple of rides. The other 3 Welshmen were strong throughout and they can count themselves unlucky not to topple the English.  With Wales matching Scotland there was a run-off for second place which was won by Cameron Monk for Scotland over Ashley Wakerley. Monk top scored for the Scots and was backed up by Boyd Beaton who had his best meeting. Ireland were a little adrift but did have the top scorer of the meeting in Damien Flaherty with 12 points. So there we have it, England take the Home Internationals for the third time in succession. The big win in round 1 made it tough for the other nations but they will be back next season to try again I’m sure.
