Nobody seemed to want to win this round at The Bullet Arena. Home favourite Darcy Broad had already had a mid-meeting blip with a third and a retirement before the last round of heats saw the meeting change completely. Firstly Lloyd Byford, who had eased to 4 wins, was expected to complete his third maximum of the season in heat 17 but was crowded out on the run to the first bend and was unable to pick off any of his rivals so ended with a last place. This gave Ryan Betts the opportunity to win his first round in the next heat. He lined up against riders well down the scorechart but had his poorest ride of the night and, like Byford, finished last. The last rider to have a go to win the meeting grasped it with both hands. Chris Holmes, although he didn’t make the best of starts in heat 20, had enough speed to round Wayne Josephs on the second lap and take the victory. Byford’s 12 points saw him come second with Damien Flaherty on 11 completing the podium. Flaherty rode consistently throughout and is well on course for the semi-finals. Broad and Betts ended on 10 points along with Josephs and these three all had strong meetings and should make the top 32. Ethan Ashby had his best meeting so far in his short career scoring a good 9 points with Alfie Goodwin just behind on 8. These two riders in their debut years will be ones to look out for next season. The riders behind them, Alain De Gruchy, Garth Street and Jason Jagger, are lingering around the bottom end of the top 32 and will have to score higher in the next few rounds to make it into the semi-final draw.
